Why are more dangerous diseases emerging in the DRC?

مايو 18, 2026  Elias Ntezimana  31 مشاهدة

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has repeatedly experienced outbreaks of dangerous infectious diseases. These outbreaks appear due to a combination of environmental conditions, animal reservoirs, human activities, and limitations in health systems. Over the years, several well-known diseases have emerged or reappeared in different regions of the country.

1. Ebola virus disease outbreaks

One of the most important diseases linked to the DRC is Ebola. It was first identified in 1976 in two simultaneous outbreaks:

  • Yambuku (now Democratic Republic of the Congo)
  • Nzara (Sudan)

Since then, the DRC has experienced multiple Ebola outbreaks, for example:

  • 1976: first outbreak in Yambuku
  • 1995: Kikwit outbreak
  • 2018–2020: Eastern DRC epidemic (North Kivu and Ituri provinces)
  • 2020: Equateur province outbreak
  • 2022: another outbreak in Equateur province

Ebola is believed to come from wildlife reservoirs, especially bats, and spreads to humans through direct contact with infected animals or body fluids of infected persons.

2. Monkeypox (Mpox)

Monkeypox (now often called mpox) is another disease that originated in the DRC. It was first discovered in humans in:

  • 1970 in the DRC

Since then, the country has regularly reported cases. The disease is transmitted from animals (such as rodents and primates) to humans and can also spread between humans through close contact.

3. Cholera outbreaks

Cholera has also been a recurring public health problem in the DRC for many decades, with major outbreaks recorded:

  • 1990s (various regions)
  • 2000s and 2010s (especially around Lake Tanganyika, Lake Kivu, and urban areas like Goma and Kinshasa)
  • ongoing periodic outbreaks up to recent years

Cholera is linked to contaminated water and poor sanitation conditions.

4. Malaria (constant endemic disease)

Malaria is not an “emerging outbreak disease” but remains the most widespread and deadly disease in the DRC. It has existed for centuries and continues every year due to:

  • high mosquito population
  • tropical climate
  • limited prevention in some rural areas

5. Yellow fever and other viral diseases

Yellow fever has also been reported in different periods, especially in areas with low vaccination coverage. Other viral infections continue to appear sporadically due to the interaction between humans and wildlife.

6. Why these diseases appear repeatedly

The repeated appearance of diseases in the DRC is linked to:

  • tropical forests rich in wildlife reservoirs
  • frequent human-animal contact (hunting, farming, deforestation)
  • population movements
  • weak sanitation in some regions
  • limited early disease detection in remote areas

Conclusion

Dangerous diseases in the DRC such as Ebola (1976–present), mpox (since 1970), cholera (recurring for decades), and malaria (endemic) appear due to a combination of ecological conditions and public health challenges. Strengthening surveillance, vaccination, hygiene, and healthcare systems is essential to reduce future outbreaks.
