1. What is water pollution?

Water pollution happens when water becomes dirty and unsafe due to chemicals, waste, or microorganisms. This polluted water cannot be used for drinking, cooking, or supporting aquatic life. It changes the natural quality of water such as color, smell, and chemical composition, making it dangerous for humans and animals.


2. Main causes of water pollution

Water pollution is mainly caused by human activities. Industries release toxic chemicals, farms add pesticides and fertilizers, households produce dirty wastewater, and mining releases heavy metals. All these substances enter rivers and underground water, making them unsafe for use and consumption.

3. Industrial pollution

Factories are one of the biggest sources of water pollution. They release chemicals such as acids, oils, dyes, mercury, and lead into rivers. These substances are very dangerous because they do not easily disappear and can accumulate in living organisms, causing long-term health problems.

 


4. Agricultural pollution

Agricultural pollution occurs when rainwater washes pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers from farms into rivers and lakes. These chemicals increase algae growth, reduce oxygen in water, and kill fish and other aquatic organisms. They also contaminate groundwater used for drinking.

5. Effects on human health

Polluted water is very dangerous for human health. It can cause diseases such as cholera, typhoid, dysentery, and hepatitis. Long-term exposure to heavy metals in water can also damage the kidneys, liver, and nervous system. Children and elderly people are the most vulnerable.

6. Environmental damage

Water pollution destroys aquatic ecosystems. Fish die due to lack of oxygen, plants stop growing, and biodiversity decreases. Polluted water also disturbs the natural balance of rivers and lakes, affecting all living organisms in the food chain.


7. Role of chemistry

Chemistry helps us understand water pollution by identifying harmful substances and measuring water quality. Scientists test pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, and chemical concentration to know how polluted water is and what treatment is needed.

8. Coagulation and flocculation

In water treatment, chemicals like alum are added to water to make small particles stick together. These particles form larger clusters called flocs. This process helps remove dirt and suspended particles more easily from water.

9. Filtration

Filtration is a process where water passes through layers of sand, gravel, or special membranes. These materials trap remaining impurities and make water cleaner and safer for use.

10. Disinfection (chlorination and others)

Disinfection is used to kill harmful microorganisms in water. Chlorine is commonly used because it destroys bacteria and viruses. Other methods like ozone treatment are also used because they are very effective and leave no harmful residues.

11. Advanced purification methods

Advanced methods include activated carbon, reverse osmosis, and ozone treatment. Activated carbon removes bad smell and chemicals, reverse osmosis removes almost all impurities, and ozone kills microorganisms very effectively.

Water pollution is a serious global problem, but chemistry provides many solutions to clean and protect water. However, the best solution remains preventing pollution at its source and protecting water resources for future generations
