US and Nigerian Forces Kill Senior ISIS Commander in Major Joint Counterterrorism Operation

A senior ISIS commander has been killed during a coordinated military operation involving United States forces and the Nigerian Armed Forces, according to a statement by US President Donald Trump. The operation, carried out in northeastern Nigeria, is being described by officials as a significant blow to extremist networks operating in West Africa.

The raid reportedly targeted a high-value ISIS figure believed to be deeply involved in planning and coordinating militant activities across the region. US authorities say the commander held a senior leadership position within the group’s wider international structure and played a central role in directing operations linked to ISIS-affiliated cells in the Lake Chad Basin.

President Trump described the mission as “meticulously planned and executed,” adding that the elimination of the commander has “greatly diminished” the operational capacity of the group. He emphasized that the operation reflects continued US commitment to counterterrorism efforts in Africa, particularly in regions where ISIS-linked factions remain active despite sustained military pressure.

Nigerian military officials confirmed that their forces participated alongside US units in the joint raid. They stated that the operation forms part of ongoing regional security efforts aimed at dismantling insurgent networks that have destabilized communities across northeastern Nigeria and neighboring countries.

The Lake Chad Basin has for years remained one of the most volatile areas in West Africa, with armed groups affiliated to ISIS and Boko Haram carrying out repeated attacks against civilians, security forces, and local infrastructure. Security analysts say the loss of a senior commander could disrupt communication and coordination within these networks, although they caution that such groups have historically proven resilient and capable of reorganizing quickly.

While full operational details have not been disclosed, US officials indicate that the strike was the result of months of intelligence gathering and surveillance. The operation is also seen as part of a broader strategy to weaken ISIS’s global command structure by targeting leadership figures outside its traditional strongholds in the Middle East.

For both Washington and Abuja, the successful mission is being presented as a strategic victory in an ongoing and complex fight against transnational terrorism in Africa, where extremist groups continue to exploit weak governance and difficult terrain to maintain influence.
