The United States has officially classified Ituri province, located in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), under Level 4 of its travel advisory system, which represents the strongest warning: “Do Not Travel.”

This decision reflects the continued deterioration of security conditions in the region, where armed groups remain active and violent incidents against civilians are frequently reported. The area is considered highly unstable, making it extremely dangerous for foreign visitors.

According to U.S. authorities, Ituri is affected by persistent armed conflict, including clashes between rebel groups and government forces. These confrontations often lead to civilian casualties, forced displacement, and widespread insecurity across several territories of the province.

The region has long been one of the most volatile areas in eastern DRC, alongside other conflict-affected provinces. Humanitarian organizations operating in the area have repeatedly reported restricted access to vulnerable populations due to insecurity and ongoing violence.

The Level 4 advisory is part of the U.S. global travel risk system, which evaluates safety conditions in countries and regions to inform citizens about potential dangers. Such warnings are typically issued in areas where threats include armed conflict, kidnapping, and unpredictable violence.

Despite ongoing military operations and stabilization efforts by Congolese authorities, the security situation in Ituri remains fragile. Analysts warn that long-term stability will require not only security interventions but also strong governance and development initiatives to address the root causes of conflict.
