The root develops from the radicle, which is the first part of the embryo to emerge during seed germination. As the plant grows, the root system expands through branching, forming an extensive network that increases the surface area for water and nutrient absorption.

The root system performs several important functions. Its primary role is to anchor the plant securely in the soil, preventing it from being uprooted by wind, rain, or other environmental forces. It also absorbs water and dissolved mineral salts from the soil, which are transported to the stem and leaves through the xylem.

Another important function of roots is food storage. In many plants, roots accumulate carbohydrates and other nutrients that serve as energy reserves. Examples include carrot, beetroot, sweet potato, cassava, and radish.

Roots also conduct water and minerals upward to the aerial parts of the plant while transporting manufactured food from the leaves to underground tissues through the phloem. In addition, roots produce certain plant hormones that regulate growth and development.

The root system is composed of several regions. At the tip is the root cap, which protects the delicate growing tissues as the root pushes through the soil. Behind the root cap lies the zone of cell division, where new cells are continuously produced. This is followed by the zone of elongation, where cells increase in size, causing the root to grow longer. The zone of maturation contains root hairs, tiny extensions of epidermal cells that greatly increase the surface area available for water and mineral absorption.

There are two main types of root systems.

The taproot system consists of one large primary root that grows vertically downward and produces smaller lateral roots. This type is common in dicotyledonous plants such as beans, peas, mango, sunflower, carrot, and oak.

The fibrous root system is composed of many thin roots of similar size that arise from the base of the stem. No single root is dominant. This type is characteristic of monocotyledonous plants such as maize, rice, wheat, grasses, onions, and sugarcane.

Some plants develop adventitious roots, which arise from stems or leaves rather than from the primary root. Examples include maize prop roots, banyan aerial roots, ivy climbing roots, and mangrove breathing roots.

Roots undergo several modifications to perform specialized functions. Storage roots store food, prop roots provide additional support, pneumatophores allow gas exchange in waterlogged soils, climbing roots help plants attach to surfaces, and parasitic roots absorb nutrients from host plants.

Roots form beneficial associations with soil organisms. Mycorrhizae are partnerships between fungi and roots that improve water and mineral absorption. In legumes, nitrogen-fixing bacteria live in root nodules and convert atmospheric nitrogen into forms that plants can use.

Environmental factors strongly influence root growth. Soil moisture, temperature, oxygen availability, nutrient content, soil texture, pH, and compaction all affect root development and function.

Healthy root systems are essential for agriculture because they improve crop stability, nutrient uptake, drought resistance, and overall plant productivity. Farmers often use proper irrigation, fertilization, crop rotation, and soil conservation practices to promote healthy root growth.

Scientists continue to study root biology to develop crops with deeper and stronger root systems that can better tolerate drought, poor soils, and climate change while increasing agricultural yields.
